AmeriCorps via Centro De Salud Familiar La Fe has a long history of providing service to the people of Segundo Barrio. La Fe Preparatory School has been fortunate to host the AmeriCorps program for the past two years. This year, La Fe has 16 AmeriCorps members assigned to volunteer at the school. La Fe’s AmeriCorps program is part of a National Volunteer Initiative in partnership with National Council of La Raza. The program provides college age students and citizens with the opportunity to enrich themselves through volunteer service, impact literacy and education, as well as provide a valuable service to the community at large. AmeriCorps Service Activities: Tutor students individually or in small groups with a focus on literacy Teach in After School Enrichment Activities (Fine Arts & Athletics) Community Service in community Participate in community events Outreach
Logistics: Each AmeriCorps member must commit to serving 900 hours (average of 20 hours per week) in a year; the service year begins in September and concludes August 31 of the following year. There are 11 positions are paid a living allowance/stipend and are eligible for an Educational Award/scholarship of $2,362.50 upon the completion of service hours. There are 5 positions available that do not pay a living allowance through the AmeriCorps program and are only eligible for the Educational Award upon completion of service. Through funding opportunities, however, the school has been fortunate enough to provide stipends to these AmeriCorps members as well.
Criteria for Joining AmeriCorps: Must be 17 years old, an American Citizen with reliable transportation. Received High School/GED diploma or will obtain during term of service US Citizen/US Legal Permanent Resident Must be culturally sensitive and enjoy working with children. Willing to work some weekends. Bilingual applicants are preferred.
